Not All Adventures Require Four-Wheel Drive

Most of the adventures we share here involve traveling, a camera, a van, the dogs...

This one starts in the kitchen.

Dixie's Delights is about to have its very first bake drop—and while that may seem a little out of place on a website called Trident Adventure, to us, it really isn't.

Adventure has never only meant exploring somewhere new. Sometimes it means building something new.

Dixie's Delights was started to honor my grandmother while raising funds for Alzheimer's and Dementia research and awareness. The name is pretty simple: her name was Dixie, and she loved sharing the food she made with others.

She didn't just bake, either. In fact, she always dreamed of someday having a café where she could welcome people and serve them delicious food. Dixie’s Delights is my way of bringing a little piece of that dream to life while keeping her memory alive.

The process has actually been more emotional than I bargained for. What started as an idea has become a way for me to process and grieve her death while still celebrating her life. There is something pretty special about pulling out her recipes, making the things she used to make, and now getting to share them with other people.

We haven't officially had our first drop yet, but we have filled a few special-request orders. The first time I packed up an order and saw everything together in the packaging was so exciting. It suddenly felt real.

I know Grandma was nearby.

Even designing and making the packaging has been part of the adventure. I wanted everything a certain way, and nothing commercially available quite fit what I had in mind, so I finally decided to just make it myself.

I make all kinds of other things. Why not packaging, too?

And this definitely isn't a solo operation.

I have to give a shout-out to my mom, who really shines in her role as Quality Improvement Director. She tests each batch to make sure what's going out would be up to Dixie's standards. It's a tough job, but somebody has to eat the cookies.

Every bake drop will include some of Dixie's core recipes: chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, applesauce cookies, and banana bread. We'll also have seasonal items and some of my own recipes that I've customized or based on hers.

In addition to baked goods, we'll have mixes so you can make Dixie's Delights in your own kitchen, coffee, and other merchandise that helps support the cause too.

Our First Bake Drop

We're taking orders August 24–28.

It is just my mom and me doing all of this baking, so quantities will be limited. We're used to doing some pretty large-scale baking during the holidays, but we've never done anything quite like this.

I'm excited.

I'm also kind of nervous.

We're not a big commercial kitchen with a staff. We're just starting out, figuring things out as we go, and seeing where this leads us.

And honestly, we don't expect Dixie’s Delights to become some huge household name across the country. That's not why we're doing it.

We want to remember Dixie.

We want to help other people remember her.

And we want to do a little bit of good in her name by supporting Alzheimer's and Dementia research and awareness.
